NEWLY DISCOVERED AERIAL PHOTO AND MAP OF OJI CAMP, CIRCA MID-1950s.
At last we can make a definitive, scaled diagram/map of Oji Camp as it was in the mid-to-late 1950s. Glenn Kunkle addressed the problem in the most logical way — he contacted the Tokyo city government and asked for the material. And they sent it! So, for the moment, here are three views. When I get time, I'll consolidate these and draw a scaled layout map, then we can argue about what each building was used for.
The map above is cropped and enhanced to show only the post layout in 1960.
Above is a 1960 map of the entire neighborhood.
And here is the 1954 aerial photo from which the maps were derived.
The aerial view above is from the early 1960s, after Oji Camp became a hospital. The Headquarters Building is still prominent.
SO, just what Little Adventure am I up to now in 2012? Why, just the most challenging one of them all! CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT.

Hi,
I arrived at Oji in Sept of 53 and left shortly thereafter for Korea (351st CRC). An early memory of Oji was the orientation lecture pointing out that Oji was smack in the middle of the largest off limits sector in Tokyo! We were only permitted to go out the gate and down the road to the subway station. Everywhere else was off limits!

I passed through this place in December 1953. At that time we all referred to it as ASAPAC! I was there Dec. 7, 8, and on the 9 December I flew out of Tachikawa on a C-124 headed for Korea. In Seoul at the 501st Com/Recon Group I was assigned to the 351 Com/Recon Company. While with the 351 I worked at Det 2 at X Corps, Company Hqs. near Kumhwa, and lastly we moved down to Uijongbu where we supplied "cheap" labor to build a field station there. I left Uijongbu as a E-5, sergeant, and rotated home to Ft. Devens. I know live in California.

I was stationed at Camp Oji in 1954-56, and am returning for my first visit in November of this year. I recognize the neighborhood in the old photo, but would not have believed the chages had I not seen the new pictures. In fact, I may well have a challenge finding my way around. Am taking a train from Narita to Oji and will spend the night in a local hotel. Glad I found this site.
Thanks very much.
