Museum Exhibitions
Throughout much of his career and extending right up to the present and beyond, Richard Avedon's photography has been the focus of numerous museum exhibitions around the world. The first of these, held at Washington's Smithsonian Institution in 1962 and in which I was involved, was the subject of an earlier post on this site. A complete list, with sample photos, can be seen on the website of the Avedon Foundation in New York.
In 2007 The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen near Helsingør in Denmark, in cooperation with the foundation, organized a retrospective show called "Richard Avedon Photographs 1946-2004." This has since moved on to Milan, Paris, and Berlin. It is now showing at the FOAM Museum of Photography in Amsterdam, and will end its tour in October 2009 at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. It features masterful prints of some 200 works, arranged more-or-less in chronolgical order.

In connection with this I was approached in December 2008 by the Dutch-language Camera Magazine for an interview about my experiences in assisting Avedon. The conversation by phone lasted some 90 minutes, and resulted in a six-page article in the March-April 2009 issue (opening spread above left, second spread on right) whose title translates loosely as " Earl Steinbicker: Behind the Scenes with Avedon." The interviewer, Dutch photographer Stefan Heijdendael, probed deeply into my work with him, especially in the earlier years 1952-56. The closing spread is shown below.
Another Avedon exhibition is opening at New York's International Center of Photography on May 15, 2009, again in cooperation with the Avedon Foundation. Running until September 6 and called "Avedon Fashion 1944-2000," it will feature over 200 works celebrating the connections between high art, advertising photography, fashion, and pop culture with original prints, contact sheets, layouts, and archival material. Earlier this month I was in New York to be interviewed by a leading American magazine about some of the stories behind the pictures taken during my time with Avedon, 1952 to 1965. More about that later, after the show opens and the article appears.
